THE REIDSVILLE SWIM CLUB WILL NOT OPEN THIS YEAR. PLEASE SEE THE LETTER BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION

Dear Members,

It saddens me greatly to notify you that the Reidsville Swim Club will not be opening this year.  The board and pool manager have made the difficult decision to close the pool permanently.

Last year the pool was slated to close unless members stepped up in a big way to help.  Michael Carlson (Our Pool Manager) sent an email that you might remember from April 28, 2024 entitled:

The future of the pool is in your hands”

To Borrow the most important paragraph from his April 28th email:

“The main message of the meeting yesterday was that this will possibly be the last year of the Reidsville Swim Club unless things change. Our pool is operated and run by its members and overseen by the Board of Directors. You as a member have a responsibility to assist in this process. Since the mid 60's when the Swim Club was born, the owners of the pool (that's you as a member), have gotten dirty and sweaty preparing the pool for opening and, doing the same at the end of the year in closing. The past 10 years, it has been myself and the same people doing this each year with a handful of members helping out.”

This was eye opening, just how dire a position our club was in last year. 6 of us (including myself) then took the challenge to fill the 6 new board positions including, President, VP, Treasurer, and Secretary. We were ambitious to keep the pool open, organize everything, increase membership, and put it on a sustainable path. We were willing to give it our best shot in hopes we could make a difference. There was a lot to do behind the scenes, for example: Organizing, Fixing things, financials, insurances, remodeling the mens bathroom, creating flyers to hand out.

When it came time for the bathroom remodeling and closing the pool late last year the number of member volunteers was healthy but the same member volunteers (More than pervious years)

This year trying to finish the men’s bathroom and opening the pool we saw a big decrease to the point of 0 members volunteering. Out of 140 some odd emails asking for help we received a hand full of replies and no volunteers to open the pool. Instead of sending another email along the same lines as "The future of the pool is in your hands" it's clear that the pool is unsustainable as volunteer based.

  • I would like to say a very special thank you to Michael Carlson our pool manager who has put forth Herculean efforts and sacrifices for the past how many decades keeping our pool club open. He grew up at this pool and did not want to see it close. He worked tirelessly and many times alone keeping the club together with very little and even unpaid for years! Thank you, Michael, I could say so much more.
  • I would like to say a big thank you to the board and all the boards past that kept our pool going, putting the hard work in.
  • I would like to thank all the member volunteers who came out and made things happen.
  • Thank you members, we will miss you all.

I know each of you might have questions about the what happens now to the Club. We will be transparent in all that we do by sending emails and posts on Facebook about the process to come. The by-laws of the pool specifically spell out this process and that is what we will be going by. Please send your questions or concerns to www.reidsvilleswimclub@gmail.com

All members who have already paid will be reimbursed.  With the money we have in our account, we will start paying members in order of who paid the earliest. We ask for patience in this process because once again, the individuals doing this are not getting paid but are volunteering their time to do this. We want to make sure it is done correctly.

Sincerely,

Roland Flego

President of Reidsville Swim Club
